Social media has become an essential part of the daily lives of many people — whether they’re scrolling Instagram for the latest on their friends or favorite influencers, learning about what’s happening around the world via Twitter news or searching for the latest hair, nail and makeup inspo on Pinterest.

Pinterest is said to be a game changer when it comes to trends — the platform shares the most sought out trends whether it involves homes, hair, DIY projects and, most importantly, beauty trends. Pinterest has also shared their 2018 Global Beauty Report which examines 8 billion beauty ideas across over 200 million beauty boards.

Interestingly enough, the "global" report featured 8 countries that made their global report list for trending hairstyles which included: the United States, Germany, France, UK, Argentina, Brazil, Spain and South Africa. Some of the top hair trends in these countries are braids, box braids and twisted braids alongside pixie cuts and messy buns.

When it comes to eyeshadow colors that are trending, Pinterest featured counties like Australia and Mexico along with Germany, UK and the US with trending colors that include purple, green, rose gold and silver. For beauty trends, Japan was featured loving orange blush, Brazil has wine-colored lipstick searched up by 93% and South Africa is loving cat-eye makeup.

While the Global Beauty Report is said to feature rising trends around the world, Pinterest seemed to be missing a lot of predominately black countries, which can seem a little ironic… especially when it comes to the trending hairstyles.

Black women have put many trends on the map for cities and countries around the world — the rise of "glass hair" or braided styles — but without crediting the culture that it comes from puts black women on the back burner. This poses an issue when black girls and women are still mistreated and ridiculed for doing the same thing non-black people deem trendy.

Although the reasons behind presenting only those countries for a global report are unknown, it’s important to shed light and give credit where it’s due — especially when basing the report off of 200 million beauty boards.
