Monday, July 24, is national tequila day! So, what better way to celebrate than a spicy margarita. The sweet, spicy, and slightly sour beverage is one you can easily make at home for a fraction of the cost of going out.

You’re in full control when you make a margarita at home. You can use as much tequila as your palette craves and add a custom seasoning blend on the rim.

“The seasoning should be considered part of the cocktail’s ingredients, so be generous without overpowering the taste,” global education manager of Tequila Herradura, Mariana Esquinca, told 21Ninety.

What types of seasoning goes on a spicy margarita glass?

There are a lot of spices out there. That being said, only a select few complement a spicy margarita. If you’re aiming for a simple but tasty rim, try the tajin-chamoy combination.

Tajin shakes out of its container as small red flakes. Woven into the mix are chili peppers, lime, and salt.

“Chamoy is a variety of savory sauces and condiments made from pickled fruit. The flavor is salty, sweet, sour, and spiced with chilis,” partner and beverage director of LaContenta, Alex Valencia, told 21Ninety.

Looking for more adventurous combinations? Then turn to non-chili peppers.

“The jalapeño and rimming the glass with its spicy juice is always a crowd favorite,” Esquinca noted.

The global education manager added that you could also season a spicy margarita with a blend of ground pepper and jalapeno. But, if you want more heat, swap out the jalapeno for habanero.

How to properly rim a spicy margarita glass

In general, there are two ways to rim a margarita glass: half rim or full rim. But, according to Valencia, “there are no rules on how to properly rim.”

Full rim

To create a full rim on your margarita glass, start with a clean, empty glass and two clean plates.

On one clean cleat plate you’ll sprinkle a generous layer of your favorite seasoning blend. The other will be for your wedged limes.

Cut a slit in the middle of a lime wedge and guide the lime around the edge of the margarita glass with a gentle squeeze. That way you get enough lime juice to adhere to the glass.

Then, just dip your glass, lime-side-down, into the spiced plate with a rolling motion. According to Esquinca, rolling the glass will give you more coverage than a quick dip.

Half rim

To half rim a glass you’ll need the similar supplies as the full rim method: a clean glass and two clean plates. This time one plate will house your spice blend while the other has a citrus juice of your choice. If you want to play it safe use lime juice.

Valencia said to angle the glass at 45 degrees. Then, you’ll dunk and slightly twist the glass into the juice first and spice second. You’ll end up with a small triangle of delicious flavor along the rim and outside of the glass.

No matter which method you use. You’ll always want to rim the glass first before you add the cocktail.
