Detroit-born, Los Angeles-based CEO, Melissa Butler is a proud graduate of Florida A&M who didn’t let adversity and scrutiny deter her away from making her dreams come true. During her Shark Tank episode Kevin O’Leary told her, “You only have so many minutes on Earth, don’t waste them trying to sell lipstick.”
Melissa admitted that though the judges comments were cruel it further ignited her ambition to succeed and taught her the importance of persevering.
At the end of the day, if I stopped my business after one ‘no’ — even a public ‘no’ — then maybe I shouldn’t have started,” Butler says. “I couldn’t allow someone else to be the authority on my dream."
Melissa realized that she needed to give her business 100 percent in order for it to succeed and as her business grew she focused all of her attention on fine tuning her beauty product. She diligently sent out cold emails on LinkedIn and after weeks of silence and determination her emails were answered.
You really want to pull deep down within yourself and remember why you started your business, and why the world needs it,” she says.
Her product has been seen on Taraji P. Henson, Angela Yee, Debbie Allen and many more. Melissa wants women to know that they are beautiful just the way they are.
You don't have to transform to look like the next "It Girl." You don't have to do anything but be you, because you are enough. Simply put, I think every woman deserves to be represented.
