There is something inextricably endearing and comforting about many Black mothers on a broad scale. They are our go-to’s for life advice and the voice of reason when we act solely based on our impulses. In many ways, Black TV moms mirror specific characteristics of real-life Black moms. Here are some lessons from our favorite TV moms. 

Cookie Lyon: “Love Fiercely, But Take No S***”

Cookie Lyon captivated all of our hearts with her unwavering loyalty, business acumen, and loyalty to family. Although Cookie consistently proved to be a tough cookie who was no pushover, the matriarch’s warmth, focus, loyalty, and dedication to her family were never questioned.

Clair Huxtable: “You Can Get To The Money And Still Raise These Kids.”

In the sitcom “The Cosby Show,” Clair Huxtable is a successful mother of five who has maintained a flourishing career as a lawyer and balanced it with her home life. Played by Phylicia Rashad, Huxtable prided herself on raising her kids right and instilling in them high moral character while juggling a homemaker career.

Rainbow Sojourner “Bow” Johnson: “Things Can Always be Figured Out”

Rainbow Johnson of “Black-ish” is an anesthesiologist who is protrayed by Tracee Ellis Ross. Despite Johnson’s flaws, she is a dedicated mother who offers up her wisdom to help her kids navigate the complex world and the role that race frequently plays in it. Her ability to add in humor t her parenting when necessary, makes Johnson all the more likable.

Aunt Viv: “Work For What You Have.”

Aunt Viv, portrayed by Janet Hubert was a sophisticated career woman who, like Clair Huxtable takes her role as a wife and mother  very seriously. We fell in love with her for her no-nonsense, realist approach to life, and her overall worldview which hinged on raising her kids to appreciate everything they have.

Florida Evans: “Life is Hard, Still Choose Joy”

Florida Evans of “Good Times” was a dependable stay-at-home mom of three who ensured that the house was in order despite the turmoils of financial woes. Florida served as an emotional support for her family and helped everyone stay joyful no matter the wrenches that life threw in her way.

Nikki Parker: “It’s Never Too Late to Chase Your Dreams.”

Nikki Parker captivated all of our hearts with her larger-than-life, happy-go-lucky persona and fierce love of her daughter, Kim Parker. Nikki, portrayed by the legendary Monique was a hilarious, hard working mother who always had a hustle going when times when rough. She loved people, but did not hesitate to put her foot down when necessary. Nikki was also courageous and inspiring for pursuing her dreams of returning to college, even when it seemed untraditional to do so at her age.
