"If you could tell your younger self something, what would it be?" When this question is asked, it causes the person being asked to go back in time mentally and revisit some of their best and worst times. While speaking to People for their annual Beautiful Issue, Tiffany Haddish revealed one of her biggest beauty regrets was getting a hair relaxer when she was just 15 years old.
The now 38-year-old Hollywood star said that seeing other girls in school with naturally silky hair and permed do's made her feel left out and as though she could not impress the boys who were catching her eye at that time.
"All the girls in school had perms and stuff or they already had naturally silky hair, so I thought if I get a perm, and then I can get in the swimming pool and my hair will lay straight and then boys will like me and all that. But I was too goofy anyways," Haddish told People.
What started as a way to attract guys and fit in with the crowd ended in a traumatic period in Haddish's life. She shared that her hair fell out and left her almost bald. How many of us can relate to a backfiring hair situation? *Raises hand* But after she made it through her "bald" phase, Haddish realized boys still liked her anyway.
This experience taught her that being yourself is the best way to be, since trying to alter yourself does not always bring you what you were hoping for. Honestly, sometimes it just lands you in a worse place than you started in. And as far as guys go, Haddish told People that she would now tell her younger self, "[Boys] gon' like you regardless. You a girl!"
In addition to remaining true to her authentic self, Haddish said her beauty mantra now revolves around self-love and self-affirmation. She tells herself, "I love and approve of you and it doesn’t matter what anybody else in the world thinks because you’re beautiful to me." Definitely words to live by — beauty comes from within and self-love is one of the greatest loves you can ever experience.
