TikTok is a hack haven, and this recent skin-slugging trend might just be a winter godsend from the platform.

The Skincare Rave

The recent dermatologist-approved skin care technique that has taken over TikTok is a trend that many users are saying is winter’s new rave. The TikTok “skin slugging” technique is a skin ritual that is a surefire way to keep the skin moisturized, smooth and ashy-free during the winter months.

Disclaimer: In spite of the fact that the routine is being touted as a new rave, people are pointing out that this is yet another TikTok trend that Black women have been doing for years.

What Is Skin Slugging?

Skin Slugging is a Korean beauty hack that involves spreading a generous amount of petroleum jelly on the face. Reports have stated that Vaseline is an effective beauty product to use overnight to achieve this process. Videos under the #slugging hashtag on TikTok have gone viral and have over 500 million views to date. TikTok users who have tried it out for themselves report improvement in their skin, including glowing, supple, and moisturized skin.

Benefits

Dermatologists have approved of this trend and have said that it is effective, especially if it is done the right way.

According to a board-certified New York dermatologist Dr. Hadley King, the process is a great way to improve skin.

“First apply a product or products that contain humectants and emollients (moisturizing ingredients), then add other occlusives. You can start with a serum containing humectants and add a face oil with emollients,” said King. “The last step would be slugging petrolatum as the occlusive. Alternatively, you could apply a moisturizer that contains humectants, emollients and occlusives, and then for extra occlusive properties, apply the slugging petrolatum.”
