Updating your closet is a rite of passage. It allows you to toss clothing that doesn’t match the woman you are becoming. You are then free to embrace fashion that matches your ever-evolving sense of self. Check out these tips for updating your closet and transitioning your style from your 20s to your 30s.
Advice for the Women Entering Her 30s
Style is constantly evolving as people mature and evolve. For the women entering their 30s and who might want to revamp their closet to reflect the new decade of life, fashion stylist Aisya Washington recommended a closet cleanse.
A closet cleanse allows you to get rid of clothing you don’t want while also taking note of pieces you don’t have. This includes statement pieces, like a leather jacket, a little black dress and loafers. You will also get rid of things that aren’t for you anymore in this process. You should research on platforms, like Pinterest and Instagram, for style inspiration. This is helpful, so you can start thinking of different looks you might want to try out.
“Most importantly, have fun!” Washington said. “Let this new decade be about experimenting with different styles until you feel like you.”
A Personal Style Evolution
Washington shared that her personal style absolutely has changed and evolved, as she has gotten older.
“As I got older, I started to try more styles and added in more color,” she said. “I was figuring it out like everyone else and still looking for pieces to fit how I wanted them to.”
She has seen her clients’ style evolve, as they’ve gotten older as well. They often suggest different brands that they’ve seen and want to try. Sometimes, they get more experimental with clothes or the opposite and request a capsule closet.
“As we figure out what styles are their favorites, they become more confident in what they like aesthetically,” she said.
What to Keep and What to Toss
When it comes to deciding what to keep and what to toss, Washington advised to get rid of things that don’t fit well or have been worn a lot. Next, she suggested ridding your closet of any trendy pieces that don’t match with your personality.
“It is most important to take inventory on what staple pieces you’re keeping,” Williams said. “That’ll help to avoid overspending.”
Embrace the Change
As women, it can be hard to embrace aging, but it’s a beautiful process. At its core, it’s about learning and relearning how to love yourself as you mature.
To embrace the style changes that come with aging, Washington encouraged women to research women their age who have styles they’d like to recreate. As your style is evolving, that’s the best to start.
“I truly believe if you look good, you feel good,” she said. “Hopefully, by seeing women their age dressed fashionably, it shows them that they can achieve the same looks and feel empowered by doing so!”
