As the seasons transition from the scorching heat of summer to the cooler embrace of fall, our skin often undergoes various changes. One common challenge many individuals face during these transitional months is managing uneven skin tone. Factors such as increased sun exposure, changing weather, and fluctuating humidity levels can lead to an array of complexion concerns.

Dr. Nkem Ugonabo spoke to 21Ninety about effective strategies to maintain a radiant and even skin tone throughout the summer and fall months.

Myths of Uneven Skin-Tone

Before we get into treatment let’s talk about the myths that circulate about managing uneven skin. Although the melanin runs deep, women of color need to be sure to wear sunscreen to protect their skin. The risk of skin cancer for Black women isn’t high but it also isn’t zero. Most issues like hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone are all worsened by sun exposure. Black may not crack but it does need to be protected from the sun with sunscreen to stay intact.

Treating Uneven Skin-tone

According to Dr. Ugonabo to keep the skin even and glowing, you need to add a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to your regime. Tinted sunscreens are always a good grab because they contain iron oxides which further aid in protecting against light. Along with the right SPF she recommends using products that contain ingredients with lightening properties. These properties are vitamin C, tranexamic acid, kojic acid, cysteamine, and azelaic acid. In addition to sunscreen, other treatments like chemical peels and lasers can be helpful as well.

Chemical peels work by providing controlled exfoliation of the top layer of skin, Dr. Ugonabo shared. These treatments can be relaxing and luxurious but remember that the downtime will vary. Healing may take a few days or a few weeks depending on how deep the peel is. Laser treatments help uneven skin by using light (heat) energy to target pigment in the skin. The downtime varies for this treatment as well. These options are not DIY at-home procedures, both should be performed by a board-certified dermatologist.

Skincare Starts Within

Aside from finding the right products and treatments that work best for you, consistency is also key when managing uneven skin tone. Stick to your skincare routine diligently to see gradual improvements. It’s important to be patient, as achieving a more even complexion takes time. Also, be mindful that clear skin begins from within. What you put inside your body reflects on your skin. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals supports healthy skin.

As the weather transitions, maintaining proper hydration becomes crucial. Hydrated skin is plump and supple, making any unevenness less noticeable. Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water makes skin less prone to dryness and flakiness. Use a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer suitable for your skin type to keep your skin balanced. Consider incorporating hyaluronic acid serums into your routine, as they attract and retain moisture, providing a youthful glow.

Maintaining an even skin tone during the summer and fall months requires a comprehensive approach that includes sun protection, a consistent skincare routine, and targeted treatments. By following these strategies, you can enjoy radiant and healthy skin even as the seasons change.  Remember that everyone’s skin is unique, so it’s essential to tailor your routine to your specific needs and concerns. With proper care, you can embrace each season with confidence and even glowing skin.
