At one point in time following someone on social media was no big deal. No pressure, no major thought behind it, you pressed “follow” and you and that person were connected on all social media platforms for life. Over time as your following increased you lost count of the people you actually know in real life. You have so many different personalities, career paths and energies on your timeline and at this point in your life it might be time to unfollow some of those people and change the trajectory of your TL.
Some people might be offended when you hit the unfollow button but you have to do what’s best for you! You don’t owe it to anyone to keep following them despite their irritating posts, negative comments or annoying photos. Here are eight great reasons to unfollow someone on social media platforms.
-
1. Account Is Too Narcissistic
We all know that self love is the best love, however it can be very annoying to constantly see selfies of a person every single day. Someone who brags about their lavish lifestyle, possessions, and self can sometimes be discouraging to the average person. You don’t want to get caught up in someone else’s life on social media and wish for a life that isn’t yours. Don’t feel bad for unfollowing someone who’s that narcissistic and has no depth or meaning behind their posts.
2. An Account Becomes Racist, Sexist, Or Offensive
If a Twitter or Instagram user posts something that’s racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise offensive, then you don’t even need to think twice about unfollowing. You might even have to block that person and report them cause ain’t nobody got time for that, seriously! We deal with enough bs in real life so it’s no need to see the ignorance online when you have the choice to unfollow.
3. An Account Becomes Too Political
A lot of people get their news, entertainment, political information and a lot more on social media but if you’re one of those people who just want to get online to laugh, dream and have fun then maybe following an account that’s very political just isn’t for you! If an account that you originally followed for another purpose suddenly becomes fixated on political debates (and starts attracting all kinds of hostile commenters and vitriolic arguments as a result), it wouldn’t be unreasonable to unfollow.
4. An Account Becomes Boring
Let’s be honest a lot of us are on social media for entertainment purposes and for fun. If an account is just boring go ahead and hit the unfollow button sis. Posts that are repetitive, or images that are dimly-lit or poorly composed are all grounds for unfollowing, especially if they become a pattern instead of something that just happens on an off day. It’s also annoying and boring when someone decides that it’s a good idea to overshare random and uninteresting details in their daily lives.
5. An Account Feels Inauthentic
If carefully curated people get on your nerves and their page feels fake you know what to do…hit that unfollow button! Authenticity sells and people love when they can relate to someone who’s transparent so it’s okay if you unfollow the too posed, too perfect, and too happy person all the time.
6. An Account Posts Too Often
Are you tired of seeing the same person and same post every time you log into your social media account? Hell me too. Let’s be honest these people are taking up space and cluttering your TL. If someone is posting so often that they drown out everything else in your feed, it’s OK to unfollow.
7. An Account Abuses Hashtags
Yes hashtags can bring in new followers, new views and likes however, if the list of hashtags is much longer than the actual update or photo caption, that’s a great sign that someone is going overboard. Yes it’s their page but if they abuse the power of hashtags and it annoys you, unfollow.
8. An Account Is Negative & Gossips Too Much
The world is a crazy place and there’s so much negativity in the world. What you read online and take in everyday can effect your mental health and your spirit. If an account is always negative and only gossips then unfollow! Don’t allow yourself to get drained from social media negative Nancy’s, follow accounts who speak life into you and posts encouraging messages.
