When the news first broke that Vontae Davis had passed away on April 1, 2024, football fans everywhere were shocked. The young star athlete, entrepreneur, and beloved family man was 35 years old, and showed no outward signs of illness. Vontae Davis leaves behind an older brother, the grandmother who raised him, and his wife of nearly 10 years, Megan Harpe.

Harpe has been outspoken since Davis’ passing, expressing to media outlets that she believes her late husband had been suffering from CTE brought on by his time with the NFL. For now, the coroners report is still being conducted, meaning nobody knows for sure what could have caused Vontae Davis’ untimely passing. Police have ruled out foul play, though they have continued to investigate possible causes.

With Megan Harpe left a widow by Davis’ passing, many NFL fans are curious to learn more about her. Harpe is known to avoid the spotlight, and doesn’t appear to share many personal details on social media. Still, her outspoken stance regarding her late husband’s alleged battle with CTE has made her a part of the national conversation. Let’s examine everything we can about Vontae Davis’ wife, including her relationship to the football legend, as well as her profession, hobbies, and more.

Megan Harpe Is a Successful Lawyer

Long before she became Vontae Davis’ wife, Megan Harpe was born and raised in Hamden, Connecticut. From a young age, she knew that she held a deep passion for those in need, working in the mental health industry while putting herself through college. While dating Davis, Harpe graduated from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, with a degree in political science and sociology, before pursuing her law degree at the University of Illinois. Now, Megan Harpe works as a lawyer with a special focus on family law and child advocacy.

Vontae Davis first met his future wife at the K Street Lounge in Washington DC, all the way back in 2010. Megan Harpe was in the club celebrating her best friend’s birthday, while Davis was gearing up to begin his second season with the Miami Dolphins. The two hit it off immediately, and began a romance shortly thereafter. While not much is known about the dating history of Vontae Davis and his wife, it is assumed that the pair were very happy, as they became engaged only three years later. Davis proposed on Halloween night 2013, by presenting Harpe with a pumpkin with the words “Marry Me?” carved into it. In 2015, the happy couple tied the knot on the beautiful sandy beaches of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

While Vontae Davis’ career on the field was highly impressive, it was largely overshadowed by his bizarre and unprecedented retirement. Davis walked off the field at halftime during the second game of the season in 2018, stating simply that he was “done.” The incredibly abrupt retirement came shortly after he had signed a contract to play for an additional year, though the cornerback claimed he had undergone an out-of-body experience which cemented his decision. After the game, Davis spoke to the press, stating “This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL, but today on the field, reality hit me and hard. I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”

According to Vontae Davis’ wife, this decision may have been made in part to avoid suffering from further head trauma, which has caused a number of NFL players to mysteriously pass away at a young age. According to a write-up in Atlanta Black Star, Harpe confirmed “Yes, he had CTE … there is definitely a story here.” Like many valuable players, Davis had sustained a myriad of concussions and other various injuries to the head during his time in professional sports.

Vontae Davis was, by all accounts, a healthy 35-year-old man. The retired NFL star launched a holistic wellness spa after retiring from football, and was in the midst of launching Davis Hospitality Group during his final days. One of his last achievements before his passing saw him publishing a children’s book titled The Middle School Rules of Vontae Davis. Davis had a rough childhood growing up, and persevered through numerous hardships. His older brother, Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis, has stated that it will take at least a month or so before the coroner provides any concrete answers regarding the state of Vontae’s condition leading to his untimely death.
