Martial arts is an excellent discipline for your mind and body alike. From judo to jiujitsu, there are so many ways to indulge in its varying practices, strengthening your body while evolving your spirit. However, for those with long locs the question of what you can wear over your locs while training to preserve the style.
When it comes to wearing something over your locs for martial arts, the goal is to keep your hair secure and out of the way while making sure it’s comfortable and doesn’t interfere with your practice. Here are some options that might work well.
Headband or Sweatband
A headband or sweatband is a practical choice. It can help keep your locs in place and absorb sweat. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics, like cotton or polyester blends, and choose a wide headband to keep your locs secure without squeezing them too tightly.
Bun or Topknot with a Hair Tie
If you’ve grown your locs long enough, you can gather them into a high bun or topknot and secure them with a sturdy hair tie or scrunchie. Feel free to double up on hair ties or scrunchies for extra security.
Loc Cap / Beanie
Some martial artists with longer hair prefer to wear a soft, flexible loc cap. These hold the hair in place, preventing your locs from getting caught during training. Lightweight fabrics, like cotton or spandex, are breathable and won’t feel too restrictive.
Durag
A durag can be a great option to protect your locs during sparring or training. It’s snug enough to keep everything secure without causing discomfort. Satin or silk do-rags are gentle on locs and prevent frizz or tangling, while also absorbing sweat.
Loc Protection Band (Elastic Hair Band)
These bands are specifically for locs, and are larger and more flexible than regular hair ties. They keep your locs bundled in a ponytail or wrapped securely without causing too much tension. Make sure to look for adjustable or stretchable bands that can accommodate the size of your locs.
Martial Arts Gi or Head Guard
Some martial arts uniforms or protective gear, like head guards or helmets, are designed with enough space or a special opening to accommodate long hair, including locs. If you’re practicing something, like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, make sure your gi allows for extra hair. This ensures it won’t become an issue during grappling.
Athletic Hair Net
A breathable, lightweight hair net help to keep your locs in place. It also prevents them from swinging around. These are often used in sports, but can work well for martial arts. Look for a version made from stretchy, breathable material to ensure comfort during intense activity.
Loc Sleeve
If you want something unique or more fashionable, then you could wear a custom-made head wrap or loc sleeve. These are larger pieces of cloth that keep your locs in place, and they come in various styles and fabrics.
