The 2024 Olympic Games Announcement

After an almost 10 year hiatus, speculations of Douglas competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics swirled. The athlete confirmed the rumors officially on Instagram, posting a photo of her on a balance beam.

“I know I have a huge task ahead of me and I am beyond grateful and excited to get back out on the floor and even more grateful for all of your support and love. It truly means so much. There’s so much to be said but for now….let’s do this #2024,” said Douglas in a since-deleted post on Instagram.

Withdrawing From 2024 Olympics

In line with her bid for the 2024 Olympics, Douglas as a gymnast was required to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials. This journey can include competing in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Technically, Douglas withdrew from the Championships, which officially ended her running for the Olympics.

“Wow, what a journey. First off, I just wanted to say that I am forever grateful for all of your support, grace, and love. It truly has touched my heart,” Douglas wrote to her Instagram followers. “I’m sad to say that due to a foot injury during practice, I will not be able to continue my 2024 journey.”

Success Story

Although spectators were awaiting Douglas’s Olympic return, the athlete has already made a tremendous mark on the sport. Douglas has three Olympic gold medals and record-breaking stats to her name. Her first feat was during the 2012 Olympics, where she earned the all-around gold medal. There she made history, becoming the first African American and the first American to win the all-around title at the Olympics. But, that wasn’t enough for the star gymnast. Douglas also scooped the silver all-around medal at the 2015 World Championships. She was the first female gymnast to win the all-around medal at the World Championships since 1981.

What’s Next For Gabby Douglas

It seems as though Douglas isn’t retiring from the sport she loves any time soon. Multiple outlets are reporting she may return to the world stage for the 2028 Olympics.

“I’ve proved to myself and to the sport that my skills remain at an elite level,” Douglas told ESPN. “My plan is to continue to train for the L.A. 2028 Olympics. It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics.”

This time the Olympics is returning to the U.S., Douglas’s home turf. Douglas is still a heroine in gymnastics, especially representing the Black female athletes. With over 1 million followers on Instagram, countless brand partnerships and an estimated net worth of $4 million, the star has made quite a mark. If she returns to compete in 2028, it will be the cherry on top of a successful career.
