I love a turkey bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a toasted and buttered roll with a side of O'Brien potatoes as much as the next girl, but, there comes a time where you have to switch up that breakfast menu.

My boyfriend is addicted to acai bowls. He can eat them all the time, and although the flavor is big so is the price tag. A large acai bowl can easily end up being over $10! $10?! For a glorified smoothie I can eat with a spoon?! No, ma'am! With our newfound obsession, eating five of those a week would be over $50 for just him.

Not on this budget.

I went out and purchased the ingredients for under $40. With that, we can eat 10-15 bowls a week. I digress, acai berries are jam-packed with antioxidants and the bowls are fun, delicious, healthy ways to spice up your normal breakfast routine. You could easily do this together as a couple, or even as a sweet morning breakfast-in-bed surprise for your boo.

Here is the recipe I love the most, but don't be afraid to mix and match the ingredients according to your preference or dietary restrictions.

  • Ingredients

2 frozen acai packets

1 banana, halved

1/2 cup raspberries, frozen

2 tablespoons peanut butter

Dark chocolate shavings

1/4 almond or coconut milk

  • Toppings

banana, sliced

strawberries, sliced

coconut flakes

  • Directions

Break up the acai packets into a blender along with half of a banana and frozen raspberries. Add peanut butter, chocolate shavings and blend. You want the consistency to be super thick so gradually add the milk.Scoop your mixture into a pretty clear bowl — for aesthetics of course — then layer with granola, slices of banana, fresh strawberries, coconut flakes, and shaved chocolate. Drizzle honey on top, and devour immediately. This is definitely not the kind of meal you cover and save for later.
