Between the dry cold air, hats, hoods and other elements that add to the winter experience, your hair may be crying out for much needed TLC. For some of us, battling dry hair is a year-long struggle, but this time of year is critical for maintaining healthy hair that makes it to the spring. If you want your curls to continue to flourish through the colder months, here are five tips to keep your coils in check:
1. MOISTURIZE

When you’re thirsty, you drink water, right? So when your hair is looking thirsty, add some moisture to it. Using products like deep conditioners, hair masks, hair oils and more can help retain the moisture in your tresses. Also, while finding products that work for your hair, you also want to make sure you aren’t using products that strip your hair of moisture. Every ounce counts.
2. L.O.C OR L.C.O

The L.O.C and L.C.O methods are used to help you retain as much moisture as possible for your hair. L.O.C. stands for: liquid, oil and cream, while L.C.O. stands for: liquid, cream, and oil. Whether you’re team L.O.C. or L.C.O, once you find the order that works for you be sure to keep it up during the winter months. You can also adjust the method depending on what your hair needs at that particular time, or add something if the three are not working alone.
3. GET SILKY

Whether you get your silk fix through a pillowcase, scarf or bonnet, using silk items while you sleep helps prevent damage to your hair via breakage or the removal of moisture. Also, it’s a way to practice self-love because let’s face it, who doesn’t love silk?
4. SNIP, SNIP, SNIP

While protecting our hair from the elements we still want to retain healthy length and we want our hair to continue to grow, right? If so, don’t forget to get your trims! Every 3-4 months, or when your hair requires it, you should have your ends trimmed. Let them go, sis.
5. PROTECTIVE STYLE

From twists to braids to crochets to weaves and everything in between, protective styles remain unmatched when it comes to, well, protecting your hair.
Not only does it give you a styling break, it also gives your hair a much-needed break. When you do not have to detangle and manipulate your hair daily, it diminishes breakage and hair loss. Of course, while your hair is in a protective style you should still use products to keep your natural hair healthy, but it can be a great way to keep your hair sheltered for a few weeks or even months, depending on the style.
