A vitamin packed smoothie is a great way to start the day, no matter what season. Whether you want an afternoon pick me up or a simple energy boost to start your morning, here is a six-step plan to make your smoothie not only nutritious and delicious, but expertly blended too.

1. Liquids first

You should typically add a cup or two of your liquid base, whether it be almond milk, coconut milk, water or fruit juice. It’s important to add the liquid first, so you don’t do any damage the blade in your blender.

2. Protein Powder

Protein and whey powders are a great way to bulk up your smoothie and give you any extra nutrients you might be missing, such as fiber.

3. Add your favorite leafy greens

Who doesn’t want a happier stomach and happier skin? Adding a vegetable or two to your smoothies will double up your protein intake to help you process all the natural sugars from the fruit you consume. It will also help you digest more vitamins and minerals, which will help your skin be at its healthiest. Kale and spinach are always yummy choices.

4. Add your soft ingredients

Next, add in elements like yogurt, tofu and nut butter for extra antioxidants that can boost your immune system and digestive health.

5. Add fresh fruits, seeds, and nuts

Add in things like almonds, chia seeds, and flax seeds for added health benefits and flavor.

Bananas and strawberries are always a great base flavor, but this is when you chose what’s unique to you. Other fruits that work amazingly are berries, mango, peaches, melon or pineapples. They will help to give your smoothie a sweet, creamy flavor.

6. Add frozen fruit

Frozen fruit is also an excellent option to add nutritional value and flavor if you don’t have any fresh fruit on hand. They will instantly chill your smoothie without the need for ice.
