Tuesday night was the perfect night to stay home and watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeat Joe Crowly in their party’s congressional primary in New York. To put in perspective how big of a deal this is: Joe Crowley has served ten terms and was defeated by a Puerto Rican woman from the Bronx who is half his age. Amazing, right?

Despite the doubts that many had about Ocasio-Cortez, she won 57.5 percent of the votes in New York’s Fourteenth district, which includes the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx.

"Working-class Americans want a clear champion, and there is nothing radical about moral clarity in 2018," said Ocasio-Cortez to her supporters on Tuesday night.

As Ocasio-Cortez continues on this amazing path, here’s what you need to know about her, her policies and how you can support:

About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:

Alexandria Ocasion-Cortez is a 28-year-old working class Puerto Rican woman from the Bronx. Her mother cleaned houses and her father ran a business which went through some trying times. Ocasio-Cortez helped her family make ends meet by working both in restaurants and as a bartender. She also attended Boston University.

Ocasio-Cortez is very open and proud of her roots  and discusses it on a video for Remezcla that went viral. Check it out below:

About OcasiO-Cortez’s Campaign:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran a campaign without any corporate donors. According to Jezebel, Ocasio-Cortez raised over $300,000 from contributions of only $200 or less — the average donation was $18. Her opponent, Crowley, had raised millions of dollars for his campaign and even skipped out on two debates with Ocasio-Cortez. She was also the first person to challenge Crowley in 14 years.

About Her Policies:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s policies are being called bold and provocative; they are very much needed. She sides with LGBTQ rights as well as reproductive justice. Some more of Ocasio-Cortez’s policies include: Tuition-free public college and trade schools, federal job guarantees, legalizing marijuana, a $15 minimum wage and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

How To Support Her:

In the November midterms, Ocasio-Cortez will run against republican candidate Anthony Pappas. Do not neglect the midterm elections and vote for Ocasio-Cortez. If she wins, she would be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and follow suit of the women who have been making strides in political history.
