Transitioning your closet from summer to fall can be a bit of a task if you’re unsure about what to look for, how and when to layer. There are the days where it feels like many more hot days are ahead and then the days when brisk mornings turn into what feels like spring afternoons. However, because the seasons are right next to each other and that chunk of time where both seasons make themselves known, you’ll need to make the proper adjustments. However, this means sticking to the lighter and more buildable pieces rather than resorting to heavy coats or singular layers because the weather is unpredictable. So we’ve put it together for you! A list: avoid these wardrobe mistakes if you want to—effortlessly transition your closet from summer to fall.
Your Statement Coat Is Too Heavy
Being cold can feel like the worst thing in the world when you don’t have the proper coat or jacket. And obviously the intensity of the cold differs between regions. Still, transitioning from summer to fall means wearing pieces that can deal with both sets of temperatures and/or is light/portable enough to take off: like a suede jacket or trench coat. Pair this with a denim skirt (not too sturdy of a denim fabric though) and you have a workable (and cute) fit.
Your Shirt Is Too Thin Or Sleeveless and Your Shoes Aren’t Transitional
Feeling too hot can be equally as daunting especially if getting cool via stepping outside or turning on the AC is inaccessible. Suit shirts and/or button downs can get the job done of being light enough for heat-related comfort and cover enough of your body to prevent you from being cold. Secondly, the boots that you’ve been dying to wear that are 100% leather or have that 4 inch heel you love: not transitional. The days will come when you can wear them, but some rubber soled loafers might do a better job of getting you from point A to B especially for the after-work activities while the weather is still good.
Your Denim Is Too Thick and Your Bag Isn’t Light (Or Smart) Enough
You know that denim skirt that I mentioned above that could pair well with the suit shirt/button down? For these times of sunny brisk days, your denim needs to be breathable and comfortable. Denim is always worth the investment as it’s versatile; however, knowing which weight works for you (and the transition from summer to fall) can make a world of difference. Your favorite wash of denim paired with a light, statement or neutral bag can exude the confidence and comfort that inspire this outfit. Yes, it’ll need to fit your laptop, wallet, toiletries, keys and maybe a couple compartments/connectors for your coffee/tea and lunch/snacks. Still, a lightweight faux leather or even a multi-compartment canvas tote will add an even stronger classic touch.
If you want to effortlessly transition your closet from summer to fall, avoid these wardrobe mistakes—and report back on what works for you!
