As you age, it can be hard to stay active – especially when your usual workout routines start feeling mundane. Physical activity has to become a lifestyle if you want to remain healthy. There’s no better way to embrace movement as a lifelong practice than by making it fun. If you think back, there were exercises from childhood that helped you get active while also having fun.

While adulting often comes with a certain amount of seriousness, it is possible to incorporate the playful, carefree wonder of childhood into your exercise rhythms. Here are five exercises that will get your heart rate up while encouraging you to embrace your inner child.

Dancing

Dancing never goes out of style. As you get older, dancing is a perfect way to break a sweat without really thinking about it. Plus, there are so many styles to try out and master. Whether you choose hip hop, bachata, salsa, the cha-cha, rumba, merengue, the waltz, ballroom dancing, or a good ol’ line dance, the options are endless. You’ll definitely get your heart rate up as dancing is a great form of cardio!

Jumping Rope

Think back to those gym days from elementary and middle school. Jumping rope is another great form of cardio. It’s also one of those exercises from childhood that works your coordination, reflexes, and agility. You can reminisce about your younger days and maybe even sing a jump rope song or two while you exercise.

Hula Hooping

If you are looking to break up the monotony of a cardio exercise, add a hula hoop. If you want to increase the difficulty level, add a weighted hula hoop. You’ll get your heart rate up in no time and get an intense cardio workout. Your core will also feel the burn. Concentration, balance, and coordination are key to succeeding at hula hooping!

Skating

Do you remember those skating parties or perhaps even field trips from your childhood? There was something so exhilarating about strapping up in your skates (or rollerblades) and skating to the rhythm of your favorite throwbacks. You’ll engage your core, challenge your balance, increase your heart rate, and strengthen your lower body muscles.

Jumping Jacks

Jumping jacks are another exercise that will take you back to the basics and help you embrace your inner child. The great thing about jumping jacks is that they are simple. They do not require any equipment or you can do them anywhere.
