At a point where girl groups have dwindled into a long-lost arm form, FLO emerged and stamped their mark on the music scene.
The girl group is a trio consisting of the sultry voices of Renée Downer, Stella Quaresma and Jorja Douglas. Known for their R&B sound, FLO has all the tools to prosper as one of the greatest girl groups of this generation.
The distinct harmonies, coordinated outfits and strong online presence have placed them ahead of the game. Their aura is reminiscent of the early 2000s, causing newcomers across generations to flock to the girl group. In past interviews, Downer, Quaresma and Douglas have recognized many old-school artists as their influences, including Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aaliyah and Mary J. Blige.
FLO may be in a league of their own. While K-pop girl groups also remain popular in the United States, FLO holds the throne for R&B music fans. The debut of their first single, “Cardboard Box,” in March 2022 attracted immense attention. Within six months of its release, the song reached 10 million streams. The popularity of the British girl group grew from there, as they continued to release new music.
Four months later, FLO’s debut EP, “The Lead” gave fans R&B hits, such as “Not My Job,” Summertime” and “Immature.” Their successful momentum earned them the 2023 Brit Award for Rising Star. They also made history as the first girl group to win in that category. Their status as the girl group to watch in the United States solidified after collaborating with the legendary Missy Elliot for “Fly Girl.”
The natural chemistry, nostalgic music videos and incredible talent have refreshed the R&B genre. FLO has made it clear that they are here to stay.
