Picture this. You are at home with a cough, feeling like crap and you don't have the energy to venture out into the world to grab some medicine from the store. Well, did you know that your kitchen can serve as a pharmacy? There are plenty of DIY recipes out there, featuring foods and spices that are jammed packed with healing properties. I don't know about you, but I would much rather fight a cough and cold with a homemade remedy over-prescribed medication.

Now, that's not to say that you can't treat coughs due to colds, allergies and sinus infections with many over-the-counter medicines. And of course, bacterial infections will usually require antibiotics. However, for those of us that prefer to avoid chemicals, I've found a natural at-home remedy that can help.

I've tried recently to help soothe my sore throat and cough by making my own homemade cough syrup, or in some cases, homemade "sore throat soothers." You know I always love a good natural DIY remedy! Courtesy of Good Life Eats, I inspired me to make my own medicines and health shots at home. So here it is:

Ingredients

– 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar

– 2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice

– 1/2 teaspoon Ground Ginger

– 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

– 2 tablespoons of Honey

  • – 1/2 cup of Water

Directions

1. It's easy, sis. Just mix all the ingredients together, and there you have it! And as a bonus, this also serves as a great detox.

2. After consuming your cough syrup, drink a glass of water.
