We all know the phrase “What’s meant for you will not pass you.” However, how many of you actually believe that quote? Rapper and actress, KaMillion didn’t at first and almost missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime.

So many of us have dreams, goals and aspirations that we hope to achieve one day but often times self doubt and imposter syndrome supersede our desire to go after them. We think to ourselves “I’m not good enough. I’m not experienced enough. I don’t have everything together yet so I can’t do it.” Not even realizing that these thoughts are simply excuses and if not now then when? If not you then who?

Betting on yourself is one of the best investments you can make and the outcome may surprise you. Take rapper KaMillion for example! She’s been in the rap industry for sometime now and has perfected her craft over the years. She has the look, the flow, the personality, the drip and much more. In many people’s eyes she’s the perfect candidate for one of the lead characters in Issa Rae’s new hit show “Rap Sh!t.”

However, in KaMillion’s eyes she didn’t think she had enough experience to even try out for the role and almost set herself up for self sabotage.

KaMillion The Rapper

Jackson was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida on the city’s north side. She began her career as a background dancer and vocalist, before establishing herself as a songwriter for artists such as Jordin Sparks, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Pussycat Dolls, and Diddy. he initially released R&B-influenced mixtapes under the name Alja Jackson, before venturing into trap music with the 2013 single “Mr. Money Bags” featuring Future. In 2019, she received a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album for her songwriting credits on H.E.R.’s self-titled album. That year she and Lil Duval were the opening act for the BET Hip Hop Awards.

KaMillion The Actress

According to Bustle, Issa was “concerned” about casting an established rap artist on the series, opposite comedian and writer Aida Osman, who plays Shawna, the estranged Miami high school friend Mia reconnects with to form a rap duo. However, KaMillion wow’d Issa over once she read for the part of Mia.

When KaMillion auditioned, she said, ‘I am Mia, Mia is me,’ and she didn’t lie,” Rae shares. “You couldn’t deny her talent; you couldn’t deny her authenticity. She was exactly who we were looking for and just continued to kill it audition after audition.”

Outside of “Rap Sh!t”, KaMillion has acted on shows including “Star” and “The Quad.”
