The highly-anticipated film has generated a buzz. The Hair and Makeup team for the movie also just shared their tips.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
In a world where hair and makeup can be a challenge for Black actors, it was especially refreshing to see that the crew that worked on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stood out from what seems like the status quo. In a conversation with Allure, they shared the processes that went into creating the remarkable looks for the film in spite of challenging weather conditions.
Making Magic
To make the magic happen, Camille Friend, who was the head of the hair department during the movie, and makeup artist Kimberly Felix-Burke had to work in tandem to create the striking looks portrayed in the film. For example, certain characters in the movie were completely painted from head to toe in blue. In some of the film’s underwater scenes, several cast members were shooting in tanks, which allowed the hair and makeup team to get in and occasionally do touch-ups, according to Felix-Burke.

Creating Lupita Nyong’o‘s loss as well painting colorful patterns on Danai Gurira’s bald head were just a few highlights for the team. While talking to Allure, Friend said that special effects were one of her special moments during the film, and walking directly with the movie’s directors who helped to shape and create the characters was fun. Some of the hair and skin products used on set, among many, according to the team were: Design Essentials Natural Almond & Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse, Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Oil-Free Moisture Cushion, Ampro Magic Fingers Braiders Hair Pomade, Unite 7Seconds Detangler.
While discussing headpieces for the movie, Friend said that the Unite 7Seconds Detangler was effective for all types of hair, and was an excellent solution to use on hair when the actors were in and out of the water with hairpieces on that needed to detangle quickly. She also said that after taking off an actors’ wig or hairpiece during shooting, she would apply Better Not Younger Superpower Fortifying Hair & Scalp Serum on their scalp to soothe it.
