There is no ceiling when it comes to Madison Star Brim.

As a rising emcee, fashion designer, and community healer, she is taking the term multi-hyphenate to all-new heights. And by doing this, she’s proving that we really can have it all.

Who is Madison Star Brim?

No stranger to the industry, Brim is the daughter of iconic fashion architect, Misa Hylton, and record executive JoJo Brim. But even though her parents are among the rich and famous, she continues to carve her own lane.

As a recent Howard University graduate, Madison Star is well on her way to becoming a star but remains true to herself throughout it all. She’s determined to not be placed in a box.

She’s also the founder and CEO of Madison Star Couture, a New York-based clothing store. Her mother started the company with the hopes of passing it on to her daughter. And today, she celebrates her mother’s legacy with each product made.

Madison Star is also a talented musical artist. She released her first mixtape called “Free Style: The Mixtape” where she raps about a wide range of topics, from fashion to New York City. She created a music video for her song “Dressed 2 Kill” to celebrate her fashion brand.

But that’s not all. Star is also a Full Spectrum doula having received her certification from the Reclaiming Our Birthing Power: Afro Indigenous Birth work program. She works as a doula with Soulful Births, an inclusive wellness and birth company on a mission to improve the Black maternal mortality rate one Mama at a time.

Madison Star Brim on the Birth of Star Couture

“When I graduated from Howard with a degree in fashion design, I always had plans to do my own thing, but there was some internal growth and processes that needed to occur before I was able to get to this point,” Brim says. “The journey began with me. I was in a dark place and felt like ‘d*mn, I graduated, what’s next, what am I going to do?’”

Even though Brim wanted her creativity to touch many different fields, she couldn’t help but feel that things were all over the place. As a result, she began focusing on her purpose.

“I was in this dark place and I think that I just kind of had an epiphany,” she continued. “I was moved by God to just finally do it. Now I’m just believing in myself and my gifts and knowing that everyone starts somewhere. I had to get real with myself and say ‘this belief that I’m not ready is holding me back from taking that first step to my destiny.'”

That destiny has led her to the first drop in the Madison Star Couture collection that comes equipped with her first music video and single, titled ‘Dress 2 Kill.’

“I would definitely say my mother and father are my two greatest inspirations because they are everything. They are my lifeline,” she said. “My brother Niko is also another big inspiration of mine.”

Brim further explains how she’s also inspired by people who stand for what they believe in.

“Asata Shakur, Miss Lauryn Hill, there’s just so many people, but particularly, our ancestors who were so clear on what was going on in this earth that they made sure that they let everyone know that they weren’t having it,” she exclaimed, “That’s what inspires me to just lift my stick up, lift my first up and keep going.”

As the daughter of Misa Hylton and JoJo Brim, Madison Star was exposed to the industry at a young age. Now, she wants to use her influence to impact and drive change in her community. And fortunately, she’s on her way to doing just that.

“In my big picture the Madison Star legacy looks like using creativity to build community.” She says. “I wouldn’t be the woman that I am today without the people in my neighborhood, my friends, my family that uplifted me and said to me ‘you can do this, you can be whoever you want to be, you can let your light shine bright.'”

Madison Star understands that even though she has a legacy to build, it’s just as important to help others as she helps herself.

“I’m stepping into a lot and what I’ve inherited through my parents has to be used to inspire and uplift others. I’m big on the whole notion of lifting as you climb.” She says.

“That’s why I decided to do the doula work now because I don’t want to wait until after everything is said and done to give back and be involved in my community through finances or ways that are not really me being present.”

“I want people to look back at the end of my career, my life, or whatever and say you know, she really used all the gifts God gave her to shine a light in dark places to uplift people.” She says before adding, “It wasn’t about ego. It wasn’t about fame. It wasn’t about notoriety, but it was really about self-expression and love and it was bigger than me.”
