National Lipstick Day is July 29, but we’re ready to start celebrating now! As if we needed a reason to buy MORE makeup, the holiday is giving us another excuse to hit the cosmetics aisle. Fortunately, there are many Black-owned makeup brands to shop for the holiday.

A Brief History of Lipstick

Applying pigment to the lips is a practice said to date as far back as 5,000 years ago. It was a popular trend that both men and women took part in.

For example, the people of Sumeria ground colorful jewels into a powder before applying it to their faces. And ancient Egyptians made lipstick by squashing insects. The result was carmine, a deep red pigment made from the shells of cochineal insects.

As a coming of age ritual, Australian Aboriginal girls used clay to create a pigment for their lips. And the early Chinese used beeswax as a kind of chapstick for their lips.

National Lipstick Day: Modern Trends

Lipstick has come a long way. Now you can find an assortment of colors, applications, and finishes to suit any makeup style. Because of this, many people want in on the action.

Plenty of celebrities and social media influencers have started cosmetics lines selling lipsticks to their fans. And you can find a number of viral clips on platforms such as TikTok, where people share trends like “Gym Lips” or the “Q-Tip Lipstick Trick.”

Now that National Lipstick Day is here, it’s time to celebrate. And what better way to do that than buying a new lipstick or two (or three). But instead of shopping at popular retailers, you can salute the holiday by supporting a Black business. Here are five Black-owned beauty brands that are giving us a reason to pout:
