Gone are the days of the hustle culture. Black women are embracing the soft life by prioritizing rest and self-care. It is especially important, during an era when stress levels in the workplace has hit a record high. The solution seems to lie in prioritizing mental and physical well-being with different self-care tips.

Everyone has those days of feeling overwhelmed and defeated at work. You might be overworked, micromanaged, bullied, or dealing with a lack of direction and leadership. Too much of anything, especially a stressful work dynamic, is not good for you. On days like these, it’s critical to take care of yourself.

Here are five self-care tips to use after a stressful work day.

Journal

Journaling has taken off as a trend on social media and no one is complaining. This age-old practice is rooted in being present and checking in with yourself. Whether you need to vent, decompress, self-examine or simply process the day, journaling is an emotional release. Instead of carrying the weight of a hard day in your body, you can let it all out in the pages of your journal.

Break a Sweat

Exercise has proven to be good for not only your physical health, but also your mental health. After a long and stressful day, don’t just plump down on the couch with your favorite snack. Put on those leggings and sports bra, grab your sneakers and exercise instead. Whether you choose an at-home workout, like yoga or pilates, or you choose to go for a walk or run, exercise is cathartic.

As you sweat and release endorphins, your mood improves. Exercise is a healthy way to release tension and alleviate any stress, anxiety or depression.

Take a Nap

Black women could use better sleep. If you are dealing with workplace stress and have a really bad day at work, catching a few extra moments of rest might help. Naps have proven to boost your cognitive health, brain function and mood.

The best time for a nap is midday, so if work is stressful, try to utilize your lunch for a quick shut eye. A 20- to 30-minute nap is perfect to reboot your brain and give yourself a fresh start.

Get Out in Nature

Chances are that you work inside most of the day. Whether you work from home or in an office, taking advantage of the great outdoors after a stressful day on the job can make a huge impact. Getting outside and enjoying nature helps relieve anxiety and restores your inner balance.

Nature is almost like a sanctuary for the mind that offers peace, inspiration and rejuvenation. Whether you decide to go to a park, to the beach or lake, or just in your neighborhood, after a long day on the job, nature is your friend.

Do Something Creative

Art and creativity is like a playground for your mind, and play can be healing. Whether you choose to paint, draw, write, sing, sew, play an instrument, or something else, creativity is an outlet for expression. The creative process enriches the mind, body and spirit. It can reduce stress and anxiety, promote healing, foster mindfulness, and enhance self-awareness.
