Have you ever wondered whatever happened to the Black hair products models from the 90s? Well thanks to Black Twitter, we now know what the young ladies are up to. But in learning their whereabouts, social media got ahold of a few hilarious throwback photos from some of your favorite celebs.

Children’s Relaxers

Before the natural hair movement resurfaced in the 2000s, little Black girls across the country wore relaxers. Whether your Mama applied it at home or you went to the salon, wearing a relaxer was pretty much a rite of passage for Black girls way back when.

Also part of the experience — praying that your hair would turn out like the girls on the front of the relaxer kit. Their lustrous, bouncing curls and shiny, slicked back ponytails were the envy of many little Black girls growing up.

But now, they’re grown up too. And thanks to Black Twitter, they’re getting the shine they deserve.

The Black Hair Products Models of Yesteryear

Recently, a Twitter user posted a question asking whatever happened to the models featured on popular Black hair care products. She included a collage of images of each girl, asking them to show themselves.

One by one, the young models responded to the OP, complete with pictures of them all grown up. And, of course, in true social media fashion, Black Twitter went wild.

Countless Black women — and some men — joined in the conversation, recalling the most memorable moments from their childhood. From remembering their first relaxer to trying to forget, every Black girl had a story to share.

Where Are They Now?

Back in the day, every little Black girl wanted to look like the models on the front of hair product boxes. Since then, the models have moved on with their lives, with some even going on to become Hollywood celebrities. Here are six celebrities who model for Black hair products:

You might recognize Kandi Burruss from her role on “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Or perhaps you remember her as part of the 90s girl group Xscape. But before Kandi Burruss made it big in Hollywood, she was big in the Black community.

Burruss took to Twitter to share her contribution to the Black hair models conversation. She posted a throwback picture of her modeling her hair color for the company Optimum. In the picture, a 19-year-old Burruss looks directly into the camera to showcase her short and sweet reddish-brown bob.

Since then, Burruss is still committed to maintaining her luscious locks. She started a hair care journey after noticing her hair was thinning, even posting updates for fans to celebrate her milestones with her.

LaTavia Roberson is known for being one of the original members of Destiny’s Child. Her sweet and sultry voice wooed fans of all backgrounds, cementing her as an IT-girl in the 90s and early 2000s.

But prior to being part of one of the hottest girl groups of all time, LaTavia Roberson put her vocal skills on full display on TV. In 1993, she acted in a commercial for Soft & Beautiful’s ‘Just For Me’ hair relaxer for children. In the commercial, a group of little girls are seen praising the product, each with their own line to rap along to.

Meagan Good

Meagan Good is a superstar actress, beloved by many in the Black community. She started acting at a young age, playing the role of Nina on the hit Nickelodeon comedy show “Cousin Skeeter.” She also appeared in a number of other popular films, including “Eve’s Bayou,” “Friday,” “Stomp The Yard,” and more.

But before Meagan Good became a Hollywood bombshell, she was a model. She worked as a hair model for Luster’s Pink Brand ‘Smooth Touch’

And even though the “Think Like a Man” actress still LOOKS like a model, she’s since pivoted to acting in TV and film.

Destiny’s Child

Destiny’s Child is a popular girl group from the 90s and early 2000s. The original group members included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LaToya Luckett.

Destiny’s Child gave us many things — music, style, dance moves. But according to Twitter, they also gave us hair when they partnered with Soft & Beautiful Botanicals to promote their hair products.

In the ad, the girls represented the four elements. Rowland represented Water in her signature coiffed ‘do. Knowles represented Earth, wearing her hair in a sleek half up, half down cascading hairstyle. Roberson was Fire, sporting layered locks that gently framed her face. And finally, Luckett represented Wind, with wispy bangs and silky, flowing locks.

Keyshia Cole

Keyshia Cole is a beloved singer with hit songs like “Love” and “Last Night.” Born in Oakland, California, Cole first achieved mainstream success in 2005 as a featured artist on rapper Javon Black’s single “I Changed My Mind,” from his self-titled debut album.

As part of their campaign, Luster’s partnered with Cole to create a limited-edition relaxer kit for fans. In the ad, she rocked a pretty little pixie cut with soft curls.

Throughout her career, Cole has sold millions of albums and singles worldwide. She also has been nominated for and won several awards, from Grammy and BET nods to a Billboard Music award.

Baby Tate is an up-and-coming rapper with hit songs that are quick to get the party started. As the daughter of two renowned musicians, it’s no surprise that Baby Tate is quickly making a name for herself in the music world as well.

But even though many are just now catching on to her, Baby Tate left her mark in the industry a long time ago. To promote Africa’s Best hair relaxing system, she sported a half-up, half-down hairstyle, complete with a little side bang action.
